Update concerning profiles:

Greetings once again

In my last update I expressed the need to create a Yahoo! profile page in order to display a custom image. Now it has emerged that many users are concerned about the privacy of these profiles and what information is on display to other users.

Thanks to the work of user Koolkat, she has created a summary of the information visable and explains how you can best manipulate your profile to show only the information you want, or how to hide your profile completely. This excellent summary can be found at:

I hope you find it informative,

A little more about Cheers

Hey Yahoo! Answers community,

Over the last few months I have received numerous emails from members of the community asking various questions about who I am. While I try to respond to all messages sent to me, I feel this blog should help clear up some loose ends.

Here are some of the most common questions I am asked while on Yahoo! Answers:

(1) Are you a member of staff ?

No, Cheers is not a member of the Yahoo! Answers team. I have simply developed a lot of information concerning Yahoo! Answers throughout my time using the service. I simply like to pass on my knowledge to help others make the most out of the community in a fairly direct manner. I feel it is important to stress that at no point did Cheers state to be a member of staff.

(2) Are you a moderator of Yahoo! Answers ?

Yahoo! Answers has no moderators. You as a member of the community help to keep the community safe by reporting unsuitable content.

(3) Why do you have no life ?

Can't quite image where this one came from, however I do have a life. I only make use of Yahoo! Answers for a few hours each day when I have spare time during university. I am a relatively quick at typing (cheers no longer copies and pastes generic answers), as such I am able to answer quite few questions each hour - maybe as much as 40 - 50 questions an hour. With just other half of these answers later being voted as the best answer, it's quite easy to rack up some points, even then just short of 80,000 points in three years is not exactly impressive.

(4) Are you a featured user ?

I was a featured user for the computers and Internet category at one point, however I have since focused my efforts on the Yahoo! Answers category. I do infrequently return to answer questions in the Internet categories and I still accept emails concerning Internet questions. I do have plans to return to the category at some point. I have also have a few questions featured by Ask Mike in the Yahoo! Answers staff blog. These can be seen here: featured questions

(5) What questions do you hate the most on Yahoo! Answers ?

I don't particularly hate any questions, however sometimes I do wish users would make better use of the Yahoo! Answers search questions feature to see if their question has been previously asked before, after all there has got to be enough information informing users how to select the best answer or how to reach level two - right ?!

(6) And finally, what answer gets on your nerves ?

I like this question, and I have to say anyone who brings up bad spelling or tells someone to use 'Google' I find somewhat annoying and may merit a thumbs down. Yahoo! Answers involves some effort after all. Otherwise, don't copy other people's answers and pass them off as your own.

If you have any questions to ask Cheers, why not send me an email - or visit my new Y! Profile Page and leave a guestbook comment.

Until next time, keep on asking and answer 'n',

New Profiles

Hey Y! Answers community,

Just wanted to introduce the new profiles on Yahoo! If you have yet to make a profile, you can do so at http://profiles.yahoo.com. These are of key importance to Yahoo! Answers should you want to make use of a central Yahoo! nickname, or to upload a personal image to use as an avatar image within the community. Please note that Yahoo! 360 is no longer supported to upload personal images for an avatar for Yahoo! Answers.

If you have any questions, please visit the profile page and click the 'help' link found at the bottom of the page. I look forward to seeing you all within the community, and feel free to connect to Cheers' profile either by searching the keywords ' Cheers uk' or using the following link.

Y! Answers - The latest

Hey Yahoo! Answers community,

It's been a while since I pointed out some of Yahoo! Answers newest updates, so here is a low-down on this weeks news:

We're number one...

That's right! After seven months of waiting Yahoo! Answers staff have managed to rectify the Yahoo! Answer leader boards which shall now continue to update at least once a week. Have you made it onto the new updated lists ?

Yahoo! Answers is unavailable ?

A few users have commented about seeing the Yahoo! Answers is unavailable error message when trying to ask and answer questions. This message appears due to an error occurring when your computer tries to connect to the Yahoo! Answers server. If you see this message, use the page back [go back one page] function on your browser and then the forward function. Your answer / question should still be present and you should also be able to proceed with posting your content.

Another glitch with Yahoo! 360 images as avatars:

Some users have also stated problems with trying to upload a custom image within Yahoo! Answers for use as an avatar. At present Yahoo! Answers staff have yet to comment on a fix or what may be causing this issue. More information shall be provided when it's known. In the meantime, keep checking out the Yahoo! Answers staff blog and suggestion board.

Community moderation explained

Yahoo! Answers makes use of community moderation, a process where members of the Yahoo! Answers community will report content they feel violates the community guidelines.

Users are assigned a trust level which is based purely on a user's previous reporting accuracy. Very accurate reporters shall have a high trust level and therefore will have more power when it comes to removing content. If content is reported by two or more trusted reporters then that content shall be removed from the community automatically.

When content is removed, the author of the question may be docked points (between 2-10) as a form of punishment. They shall also be sent a violation notice which shall outline the reason for their content being removed as well as a link to appeal the removal of such content should the author of the content feel it was removed incorrectly.

When a user files an appeal, a member of the customer service team for Yahoo! Answers shall review the appeal. If they agree the content was reporting incorrectly, the content shall be reinstated back into the community along with any points originally deducted. Furthermore the user(s) who filed the report shall be considered less trustworthy and will find it harder to incorrectly remove content from the site.

This is further explained in the diagram below:

Your content (i.e. a question or answer)

2 or more reports are filed by trusted users

The content is removed automatically without review

The author shall be sent a violation notice

The author of the content can appeal → Or author will take no further action

The appeal shall be reviewed by a member of staff

The appeal can be declined → Content is not replaced and ten points removed

The appeal is successful and the content is reinstated along with any lost points

Violation notices are simply a warning to indicate that a user has broken the rules. Your account should be in no danger of being suspended unless you receive many violation notices in a short period of time or post very bac content such as breaking the law.

Hopefully this helps to explain the process a little clearer.

Love in a name ?

How do you get those symbols in your Yahoo! Answers nickname ? - Cheers is here to explain all:

"Most users make use of alt codes, which requires a user to hold down the ALT key on a keyboard while typing in a numeric command on the number pad, which is found to the right hand side of the keyboard:

For example in order to type a heart, hold down the ALT key and press the number 3 on the number pad, then release ALT. This should present you with the symbol ( ♥ ).

For laptop users, you may be required to hold down the blue FNC or function key while holding down ALT in order to activate the number pad.

A full list of alt codes can be found using the link below
http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/ALTchrc-a.html

If you are having problems with creating the symbol, you can also use the site above to copy and paste images in. "
